While I love my Subaru to death, the right XJ and a fistful of cash could go along way...
You'd be making quite a roadtrip, though!
That would be quite the trip.
Having driven a '98 5spd XJ for the past 140k miles let me say that it is by far the most reliable car I've ever owned. In my almost 10 yrs of ownership I've only ever changed the brake pads, belts, battery, plugs, air filter and replaced the waterpump due to a slight leak when parked.
I will however, give you some pointers on XJs because there is such a lack of knowledge base on the web
If I had to do it again, as blasphemous as it may sound on GRM, I'd get the auto. First off the autos come with 3.55 gears. The sticks get the 3.07s. That has always seemed backward to me. Why give the one with the torque converter the lower gears? An auto XJ with the same engine will leave mine for dead at a stop light. The auto will tow a heck of a lot more as well. IIRC the stick is only rated at a measly 1500 lbs towing capacity while the auto will go 5000. Reverse on the stick is not synchronized and will grind practically every time you put it in. Meh..you say? Try getting unstuck using the rock back and forth method. Not an easy task. On the trail, the auto makes it so so much easier to just ease up on an obstacle and drive over it. The only downside is that it doesn't hold back down hill.
Anyways...this is something you might consider. I figure you plan to regear anyway but you don't have to run such super low gears on an auto.
