I am thinking Dodge Magnum. It is on my short list of "Dad" Mobiles that I have. Yes I am getting the big V8.

How can you say no to this?

You never once mentioned fuel-economy as a critera, so I say Full-size Bronco.

Seating for five, plenty of power (assuming you man up and get the 351 ), 4x4 when you need it, plenty of room in back (removable shell should it ever not be), awesome turning radius, disgustingly good parts availability...

Just avoid the push-button transfercase models and swap auto-locking hubs to manual units immediately post purchase if it happens to be so equipped. 2nd-gens ('78 and '79) are my preference, though 3rd-gens have considerably more creature comforts.

Corolla Dx wagon, mercedes 300te/d wagon, or bmw 525wagon would all make my list. The problem with the corolla is most of them have probably been driven to death. The mercedes or bmw can be had for cheap but might bankrupt you if anything breaks. The diesel mercedes wagon might be neat because diesel is cheap now and there is a whole community dedicated to oil burners.

Subaru Outback, a bit more room than the forester in the back as the kids grow, legacy wagons are a bit harder to find. On my legacy GT (turbo model) I added an uppipe and downpipe, got it tuned and it actually gained 2 MPG. I regularly get 25MPG all day long, with 250 HP at the wheels. Outbacks can have the same engine, but you can go NA as well to gain a bit more MPG

I liked my old Ford Aerostar. I had the XLT extended version, and had room for darn near anything I wanted.

howbout a tahoe or yukon? i have 3 kids and 3 dogs. we got a denali with the 2nd row captains chairs. we love it. you can get a used tahoe for $3-$4k easy. they get right at 20mpg with the 5.3, you can tow, they have tons of room, 4wd, and they're bullet proof.

Isn't there a police package Tahoe? I vaguely recall that someone on here has one...

I don't like SUVs but that one appeals.

I've found my Xtracab Toyota T100 to be a remarkably good family hauler. The back seat works quite well. I've had adults back there for hours at a time, in comfort. We travel in that truck all over the place on vacations. Not great on gas mileage, at 17-19 mpg, but it's not terrible either. And that pickup truck bed sure is handy. With a cap on the bed for vacations, I can carry as many suitcases as the wife can come out of the house with.

Too bad that you can't get that in a stick shift and AWD, I bet I could sell my wife on one.

We are looking for a Mom car to replace our A4 - it needs to be all wheel drive and a manual trans.

The 99 9-3 would be a good safe car but if you are going to go that route hold out for an SE, bigger turbo and intercooler. They are good for like 20 more HP and TQ.

I tend to buy Subaru's on the cheap. My current Daddy ride: Photobucket Photobucket

I had a Forester with the 2.5L and 5-speed last year. They haul all kinds of stuff and get about 27-28 mpg.

I have a soft spot for the 99 9-3. The rental we had on our honeymoon was a convertible 99 9-3 SE.

If not, for $4k, you're in the hurt locker. I've gone wrx wagon, and would go Forester XT.

the trunk is massive. they're reliable. they're cheap. they ride good. and they do sweet burnouts.

BTW I can get 21mpg in mine with no highway driving , and it dose not look like I barrow'd it from the wife.
