two wires to a dc motor.
I want to switch the polarity going a motor.
So I want a switch that will turn the motor on, off and reverse.
Something like a simple power window switch.
How the hell do I do that?

double pole, double throw. Got it. Never mind.

Yeah, DPDT. I designed this circuit to run a window motor from the polarity switched window switch for an Esprit. The Esprit window switches, sourced from some English Ford or something, are not the most robust. This circuit takes all the load off.
That way, you can use a tiny little DPDT-center-off or whatever to control a motor that would otherwise blow the switch.

Make sure it's got a "center off" position. A standard double pole, double throw (DPDT) is always on - it always has one throw or the other activated. A "center off" has on-off-on positions. If you want it to stop once you release it, what you want is DPDT momentary center off. Digikey calls it mom-off-mom in their filters.

Good catch DC.
