I've got a friend who wants to get rid of his WRX wagon soon. I'm pretty sure that it's a 2002 with about 180k miles on it. He's the original owner and it's completely unmodified. It needs a muffler and some body work. It still has its original clutch.

It's pretty beat up and, while still roadworthy, with the mileage and some front end damage, trading it in isn't really an option. I'm thinking that it might have some appeal as a Rallycross or Ice Racing beater, but I have no idea how to assign a value to it as such.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

Have a friend that recently bought one maybe a bit better than what you describe after searching a long time for one that wasn't riced out. I think he still paid around 6 grand. Demand exceeds supply. He bought it via eBay.

Absolutely nothing. Give it to me.

Edit: Sounds like a challenge car. If I were planning on going this year, id bite. Great rally option otherwise.

If it's WRB and a 5-Speed, please tell him $2000 and I'll mail you a check.

I don't think that's too far off from where he wants to be. He's in Connecticut and I think that the Rallycross market should be pretty strong around here.

I'm curious what constitutes a Bargain in the WRX world right now

I've seen a few running driving examples dip under the $2000 mark in the past few months. Makes me want to buy another one.

Its beat up and will need some work soon. I think the consensus will be at or around 2 Gs.

Must be nice. That car up here (Ontario Canada) would probably still easily get $5K.

I have seen 97 Outbacks with 300K kms selling for $3500.

I wish I could pick up a 2002 WRX (even ratty) for $2K

    I would guess 2-3K.

I was going to try and encourage him to list it in the $2011 classifieds, but he is a Canadian citizen and his family has a place in Quebec, so maybe I'll suggest that he try to sell it up there.

Of course, I suggest that he go back to Canada all the time, so he may just ignore me.

Tell him I will meet him at the border with $2500 - Just kidding - wife will kill me!

Here is an example - may not be that ratty, but mileage is similar:

I'd say it could actually be worth $5k, around here I'm sure it would sell for that. what he can actually sell it for depends largely on your area. If I had the money, I could see paying 3k for it sight unseen with more info. I'd love to have an early 2000s 5spd wrx wagon.
