Best I ever did was make a profit by purchasing a non running MGB. Put the plug wires on in the correct order to fix it. Sold running MGB. Seller was so sick of it that he even delivered it to me on a trailer.

I haven't put a car back together with a piece of wood, but I did find myself a few years ago at the side of the 401 with a flat tire, a functional spare, and a jack... but no handle for the jack, no tools, no CAA card, and no money for a tow.
Considerably to my own surprise, I made a turnbuckle out of a piece of rebar and a couple of feet of nylon rope I found lying on the shoulder of the road. The jack worked great. I think the nylon rope eventually disintegrated, but I've still got the rebar, because You Never Know.

I just fixed my 30-year old dorm fridge with a few screws and a chunk of gas tank strap. Just in time for Thanksgiving!
