not sure you can do the swap on the 510.. that would put you back into the realm of being smogged again if the engine is from something that needs to be smogged.

While technically this is true, no one actually cares. If the chassis is pre-smog, then you don't have to smog it.

The exception to this would be if you're in an area where cops regularly pop hoods on imports and your the type of person who encourages such encounters with the local law. In that case, being 100% above-the-board legal might actually save you some headache.

You could upgrade the 510 to the L18 or L20 engine. I don't know how easy a swap would be, but the subsequent Z and KA engines were derivatives of the L engine. And the L engine was borrowed from the Merc engine.

Am I silly in thinking the mk1 Ford Capri is a decent middle point between the Mustang and 510? I love/loved mine but hated the rust...

    Both.

The Left Coast/NW is the place (in the US) for anything Datsun. Try the ratsun board, and also do a search for Troy Ermish.Although I am a fan of the 510, I wouldn't limit myself to just one model. A 240Z/260Z, 1200 Coupe/Sedan or even a 521/620 done right would be a nice commuter.

As another Mustang guy, they are whatever you want to make them.I would also do a nice period Tran Am style with EFI and a 5 speed.
