Got a Holden/Daewoo/Suzuki TS20D engine undergoing a rebuild right now. I don't have much of a budget but I'd like to improve the performance while its out. No boost right now. There aren't that many of these engines in road racing/time attack and the TS20's little brother, the 1.5L D-Tech, wasn't real good with oil temperatures. If this one is better I might boost later, but I want to test first. I'm already unshrouding the valves and doing some minor porting.

I already have a CAI and it's a piece of cake to do a header later, so there's no reason to do it now while I'm financially tight.

Any other ideas for cheap/free upgrades?

Cut the head to the minimum height you can will bump compression. Not good for boost, good for N/A.

On a modern, EFI engine that runs pretty high compression, could that just end up triggering the knock sensors and pulling timing all the time?

    9.8:1 right now.
