About whether it's worth creating the account to sign because nothing is likely to come of it or importing cars at 15 years old?

    Both :)

Also, given the current pressing issues the government should be dealing with, I don't think this should be given any attention whatsoever.

How, in any way, shape or form, is importing cars at 15 years a bad thing?

Wow. If this makes the rounds of a few magazine websites we'll have 25k signers in no time. Yes, I agree and signed it. 15 years is long enough because I want a Honda Beat and a Cosworth Sierra and.....

I think part of it is that he doesn't want the gov't distracted by this when there are much bigger issues at stake.

Here? Not opposed at all, except for what I wrote above. The way I see smog regs is that it shouldn't matter what equipment it has on it, as long as it meets the standard for the year it was produced. Not sure about the bumper/lighting regs etc.

It's not like they are going to stop everything and spend a year on changing the import law. If the petition makes it, if anything, it will be considered instead of not considered at all.

cliffs: worthwhile/sensible idea, poor execution with obvious alterior motives

I'm all for that, but whoever created the petition blew it. The first section (about wasting terrorism money on seizing cars) sounds like a citizen actually concerned about government waste, and wanting to stop that waste. A point that the administration might actually consider seriously, because it's valid. And the "save taxpayer money" voting bloc is very loud and powerful.

Unfortunately, the second part asking for the rule to change to 15 years shows the request's true colors - the petitioners don't really care about government waste at all....what they really care about is being able to import cool non-USDM cars. Which I'm quite sure the administration doesn't care about one bit. Because the "import tuner car inthusiast" voting bloc is tiny in proportion to the general population.

While I want the rule change as much as anyone here, the motivation for the petition is pretty transparent. Fanbois want to see more JDM GT-R's and such.....we all know that's the case.

Put aside the fact that "terrorism money" is actually not being used to seize cars. The agencies involved in that (ICE/DHS/etc) have budgets and divisions specifically to enforce customs regulations. If they stop going after cars, that budget for that division will go to other customs issues like stopping fake Gucci purses or something else. It won't transfer over to the counterterrorism divisions of ICE/DHS. That's NOT how the government works.....

disclaimer: I've both worked on "the Hill" and for "the Feds" in the past....
