    Warn 8274-50 baby!

10,000lbs with the upgraded motor and I've stalled it trying to pull a car back up on my deck that slipped off sideways.

Believe me, the extra weight capacity is great if you haul dead cars.

I've pulled cars onto my truck with all 4 brakes locked with this thing.

It cost me $100.00 off craigslist and another $250-ish to put a new motor in it.

Ask any 4-wheeler about the 8274 Warn.

Nice find, but that is a $1200 winch, and I think it needs to be permanently mounted.

I use a wal-mart $50 electric winch. It does OK. It does have a manual crank you can use. It has a ball hitch mount, which I use. Of course, this is for my mini, which weighs in below 1500 lbs. I don't think it would work that well if the car couldn't roll.

I will agree that an 8274 is a great off-road winch, though a bit overkill for a trailer. You can troll the off-road forums for a decent winch that would still be more than adequate. Expect to pay $400 for one in decent usable condition. Less if it needs a rebuild.

I have always been intrigued by this HF winch: http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/itemdisplay/displayItem.do?itemid=95912&Ca... It is often on sale for ~$70 and it has a wireless remote. I could sit in my car and steer while I'm controlling the winch. If my $35 1500lb winch ever gives out, I'll get one of these.

They have a reputation of burning out prematurely.

<--The guy who doesn't know anything about winches bought one of those ~$70 HF winches last year and hasn't used it ;) We're talking about the camo one, right?

My friends have one mounted to the floor of their shop to pull vehicles in to the lift bay. They say it struggles. I don't know how good the battery they used is, or any of the other factors that may affect performance.
