I'm looking into maybe buying a '87 Mazda RX-7 GXL (stick-shift). Pending my parent's approval, I e-mailed the seller. Within the response, the seller states:

"The gaskets in the shifter wore out and give a sloppy shift, shifts fine just a little loose."

Do you think the "gaskets" he's referring to are something else, like seals? I don't think it's leaking if it still shifts. The shift knob and shift boot were stolen from the car, so could that have damaged the shifter?

he almost certainly means bushings. I don't know about FC's, but e30's can get pretty crappy if they're original.
