    Seconded.

I would immediately put in a motor that would enable it to be driven on the highway. At excessive speeds, at that.

    LSx driving the rear wheels?

I wonder why he thinks it won't do highway speeds? I had an '82 Mazda GLC that ,I believe ,only had 67 hp and I drove it everywhere.

Nah, i'm not quite that handy... but i could see a hot Fiat motor in there? Or if i wanted to get real crazy, a nasty B-series Honda motor?

Didn't Luke have one of these for a while? I know he's in Aus. but maybe he can give some insight as to it's speed abilities, or lack there of.

Oh it will get there, just maybe not before the end of the on ramp when the 18 wheeler smashes you like a bug.

they weigh next to nothing. If the Fiat X 1/9 could make due with that little hp (in strangled 1300 guise) or the first gen Hyundai Excel which only had a screaming 62hp... it will do just fine.

italian engines LOVE to rev too.

I would be tempted to drop a Fiat 1500 SOHC into it

I drove mine on the highway once. It would sit on 90 km/h (55 mph) quite comfortably, and get all the way up to 110km/h (~70mph) on the downhill stretches.

The ad says 65 bhp! That's an ambitious total. The actual figure is more like 25, but that's enough to be entertaining. You can drive them everywhere at full chat and no one blinks an eye.

Still, it needs a motorbike engine.

actually no. the Yugo is more akin to the Fiat 128, which was a front engined compact that came in sedan, coupe, and hatchback form. It was also the "bones" beneath the mid-engined X 1/9. The 126 is more like the fiat 850.. with it's engine in the back.

Personally, I would like to have a 125

I prefer the earlier 131. It's a little more crisp feeling. The 2 litre Brava is ok but the rear diffs are failure prone and the interiors are plasticky and very dated looking now. One thing I would not be afraid of with either version is the automatic. They run surprisingly well.

The manual 'box in the 131 is meant to be brilliant, too. Originally designed for a truck apparently, and bulletproof because of it.

the manual box in the 131 can be used in the 124 if you go down under and grab the "abarth" extension that puts it almost out of the stock hole in the tunnel.

The gear spacing is a little off for a 124 though..

    and yes, I would LOVE a 131

I bought that same car new in 1981. Sold it in '85 for my GLH Turbo and more than doubled my horsepower.

Couldn't be any worse than the Renault 4CV which was my first car (bought by my father). Drove that car all over PA, OH and VW including the full length of the PA turnpike. I was never going to get a speeding ticket but it was a lot of fun to drive.
