I have a line on an XJ8 that has the engine partially apart. Not sure what the problem is (for some reason either the owner doesn't know or isn't telling) but the rest of the car looks really good.

What's the worst that could happen?

once you fix the motor you have to fix the trans. Those motors are not the greatest and the trans are usually an issue as well.

Now if the rest of the car is in perfect condition it is the perfect candidate for a 4.8, 5.3 LSX, LM4,7 etc. GM motor and trans swap.

A 4.8L/4L60 combo would be perfect.

I'd contact one of the Jaguar swap guys like John's Cars and see what they say. They may not have done engine swaps on XK8s yet, but I'm sure that they've put some thought into it.

More info: according to the owner it's a "bad timing chain." Not sure what additional damage may be found. May go to see it mid-week.

My guess is that either this is a repair where the owner is in over his head, or a bent engine that's going to cost too much for the owner to fix. Leaning toward the latter, based only on a few text messages.

The Jaguar V8 is an interference engine so if there's a problem with the timing chains, chances are there's now a problem with valves, pistons, etc. If he just has the front of the engine apart, make sure you check the valves.

If the valves and such check out, I'm pretty sure the Lincoln LS V8's timing chains/tensioners are identical and are a lot cheaper than the identical part from a Jag dealer.

My vote would be LSx/4L60E although figuring out the electronics to keep the car happy might be a huge pain.

Continental Imports talks about Timing Tensioner Failure
