They did that at the community college I used to go to, but they destroyed most of the stuff. I got a Sun 404 distributor tester (that i sold for $150) out of the bottom on a dumpster, but most of the stuff they smashed with a front end loader or had someone take away to scrap. They even left a cylinder boring machine (I saw a working one of the same model for sale for $15k, although I dont know if this one worked) sitting outside in the rain to get ruined.

Shop classes in my high school. I took all I could.

I signed up for Metals I & II in my Freshman year in high school. YIKES! I came alive as I learned how to run a lathe, drill, mill, grinder, spot welder, brake, oxy/acy + arc welder, and even made aluminum castings in a small foundry. I took Metals III and IV the next year.

I signed up for machine tool technology for my junior and senior year and loved every minute of it. The high school and DAVEA vocational school have since bailed out on these classes.

The one nice thing the Vocational school did was take all the kids not destined for college and help them find a trade they might like and put two solid years of training behind them. Auto body, auto mechanics, machine tool, welding, carpentry, Food/chef training & truck driving.

Sure I traveled with a pack of burnouts on the bus to DAVEA; but this helped many a troubled teens find a career.
