    Announcement

The Roper Mountain Science Center (RMSC), Greenville, SC, will be hosting an “Automotive Technology Day” Second Saturday event on October 9, 2010 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. RMSC is part of the Greenville County School System. The event is open to the public and most activities will be geared towards elementary school aged children. Entry fees can be found at the following: http://www.ropermountain.org/General/hours_fees.pdf

Specific activities are still in the works, but Michelin, Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) have all confirmed interest in participating. We are contacting other organizations for additional volunteers and potential activities.

Although most activities will be designed for elementary kids, there should be plenty of opportunities for parents to learn about Greenville’s role as an automotive hub. Bring the family, or just show up and talk cars with fellow enthusiasts.

How am I involved with this event?

Shortly after moving to Greenville from Charleston, we began taking our kids to RMSC for Second Saturday events with topics such as: Star Wars, Baseball, Insects and the Civil War. These were all fun events that the family enjoyed together.

One of my primary passions in life is motorsports and, while attending a local SCCA meeting, I started to think about Greenville’s automotive industry and how I’d like to share that interest with my kids. It occurred to me that an Automotive based event at RMSC would be ideal not just for my family, but for many in our community. I created a pitch and shared the idea with the RMSC Director, and he liked the idea. Recently I’ve been meeting with the RMSC staff to help make this a successful event.

    Opportunities for volunteers

    • There will be space for about 10 cars to display. We are looking for race cars, exotic cars or anything particularly unusual.

    • Promote your car club.

    • Cub Scout, Webelos and Boy Scout are encouraged to create automotive related activities and/or demonstrations.

    • Demonstrate something your company provides (parts, tools, software, etc) to the automotive industry.

    • Sit down with a group of kids for a scissors and paper activity (e.g., how a car suspension works).

    • Send in your ideas!

    Thank you, Steven Cagle
