It's waaaaaay more awesome to build what ya got than to buy a better more conventional trail rig!

How tough would it be to swap the whole front axle from a Wranger under there?

Not that tough. But I don't think a wrangler front axel would do much for me. They are good for reasonable sized totes and a wranglers weight, but my truck is too heavy for that assembly without trusses and some better axel shafts. Looking at other forums the ford trucks of the late 70's seem to be the axel of choice. I'm just not sure I want to do a solid axel swap.

Have you looked into rock sliders? Your rockers are one of the more vulnerable parts offroad. I'm not sure if anyone makes them but they can't be too hard to fab up.
