Britain's oldest car, a two-seater Wolseley 6 built in 1904, 'runs like a dream' and has never broken down. It is not known how many miles the car has clocked up because it was made before mileometers were installed in British cars.

Mr Caseley bought the car for an undisclosed sum in 2004 from a friend who collects vintage cars.

He said: 'She still runs like a dream. I'm very proud of her and love showing her off.

'She's quite a regular now in the town.' [...]

'It runs on petrol and does around 30 to 40 miles to the gallon so is more efficient than most of today's cars.'

The one-cylinder motor, which has a top speed of 29mph, still sports the original registration plate CJ 164 and is still in mint condition. r

30 to 40 mpg! That makes modern cars seem all the more pathetic.

Cool . I love these 'vintage car still in use' stories.

Looking at the photo, on the one hand, it's amazing how far the automobile has advanced, yet, fundamentally it's basically the same.

I find it hard to believe that it has never broken down.

not much on it to go wrong.. and it is probably vastly over built

    I'd believe it.

Keep up on the regular maintenance on your lawnmower and see how long it lasts.

I don't know which engine would be more advanced, the lawnmower or the Wolseley, I'd bet the lawnmower is.

I guess that now I think about it that it is certainly possible. I am more used to thinking in terms of more modern cars. Flat battery, gummed up carb, fouled spark plug, electrical problems, etc. Considering it probably doesn't have much of an electrical system and probably has crank start then it is definitely possible.

50mpg would be easy with a 29mph top speed. Probably closer to 60.

Moreso if it had to accelerate as slowly as that car surely does.

    Cool car, though.

not much aero to worry about at 29mph.. considering the car probably cruises at 25mph or less.. my 318ti usually gets into the 40s at a steady and flat 25mph

I bet it cruises at 10-12mph. My model A which is 24 years newer and more then likely has 5 times the hp stock was only rated for 40ish.
