I'm this > < close to getting an iTouch but not being a real big Apple fan I have no idea what is in store for the next version.

When is the next version due out? Any rumors to what the difference might be? I'll probably pull the trigger in early April FWIW, should I wait until whenever the next one comes out?

To be a big Apple fan, buy an Apple product.

True enough - got an iPhone 3G because BLackberry wanted $400+ for the new one at the time... so glad I cheaped out. It does absolutely everything better than my last blackberry and Treo combined.

Knowing apple, the next one will be a bit more powerful, have a few more features, maybe a bit smaller, and cost the same money. If I were guessing, I'd think maybe they'd add a camera or somthing. I wouldn't expect big changes on the hardware side. I expect most of the changes to be to the software, which you can update.

I am not sure if they are going to rev the iTouch, the the iPhone is definitely getting close. Keep an eye on:

    http://www.macrumors.com/

for the latest. It would suck to buy one just before a rev.

    Which is why I'm asking!

Good stuff coming. The product cycle never stops anyway, so there's always something better coming down the pipeline.

I love my iPod touch, it's a ton of fun and useful. I spend most of my time bworsing the intraweb on it. If you're waiting for a new release then don't buy one ever cause apple updates hardware and software yearly, so just GET one.

I know the cycle never ends but if a new release is only a month or two away I may want to wait - or I may not be able to resist, who knows?!

Like I said, there's a lot of chatter about the 3.0 software, but nothing about hardware. I'd go for it, just because (a) they're awesome today, and a new release won't de-awesome them and (b) you can update the software anyway.

If Apple makes a big announcement, it would likely be at WWDC, which is in June or July. However, I concur with everyone else here that says just go get one and update the software if necessary.

If you're really concerned about it, there are websites that do nothing but blog about Apple rumors. Sometimes they get it right. Peruse them and if you see a rumored release that you think you should wait for, do so.

Just announced at the iPhone/iTouch 3.0 keynote today. The next release for both generations of the iTouch will be $9.95 and it will be free for the two generations of iPhone.

Should be available to the general public "this summer" for beta testers, it is available now.

I am pretty much an Apple hater, I use one at work every day and I still hate it. But I did buy an Ipod touch 2g in October (my first ipod) and absolutely love everything about it. How I can be listening to music, twittering, surfing the net, facebooking, tracking my daily calories/exercise, playing a game, measuring my cars performance, the list goes on forever, all on the same tiny device that slips into my pocket amazes me.

It looks as if there isn't going to be any new hardware soon with the economy in bad shape and Steve Jobs MIA for a while. The software rev sounds like a good move for apple, it's less costly and there are no huge missing items in the hardware specs as they are now.

Except a camera and GPS... What I want is an iPhone without the Phone (and mandatory data plan) part.

Guess I'll just have to make to with an iTouch. Glad to hear there aren't any major changes in the future, no reason to wait now!

Get a jail-broken iPhone and don't import a sim for it. You won't be able to update it unless the latest firmware version is hacked and of course support is out the window....

And it still wouldn't have GPS (due to the kinda funky way GPS is implemented on the iPhone)

Yeah, it would be one step closer though.

It sounds like, a decent PDA is what he needs. Just get one with a camera (or add one on) a GPS and a decent sized memory card. Good to go ...

It does a good job, but it's triangulating your position based on cell phone towers in the area, rather than having a true GPS chip. No cell service, no location.

The latest Iphone has real GPS

  • confuZion3

    March 19, 2009 8:44 p.m. confuZion3 Dork

It's real GPS and it's pretty damned good. It can find me in NYC amongst all the buildings when my friggin' TomTom get's lost immediately and permanently. It might not be 100% accurate when I'm in the city, but at least it doesn't spaz out and freeze and tell me it's lost.

Edit: Just about the only place it doesn't work is in the Subway and Tunnels.

Super-Edit: Speaking about subways, if you zoom into the map a little bit, you can see where all the Metro stations are AND even what trains run there! And it's correct!

If anyone is still thinking of getting one, they're on WOOT today for $169. If you don't know, woot has one item each day and only sells it for that day or until its stock is gone. There was a nice laptop yesterday that Imissed out on because it sold out...
