Cyclists appear to basically be the Smokey Yunick of human-powered sports. I wonder if cycling just gets all the press, or if other run/jump/throw sports are just as bad? I know there have been several sprinters under suspicion, but cycling seems to be the hotbed of cheating.

And is it just me, or do you not hear about much doping among swimmers, save for Phelps' epic bong swats? And you can hardly say he's going to swim faster after that (unless someone puts a bag of Doritos at the other end of the pool).

sprinters and field event athletes (strength events: shot, discus, hammer etc)anything explosive, you don't hear much from the long distance folk since they need their strength in long (relatively) slow amounts

Do any other sports require three weeks of exertion with only two days off?

At performance levels that are theoretically not possible.

Does anyone have the link to the story on the journalist/bicyclist who used performance enhancing drugs for a while experimentally? It was a pretty interesting read.

He was a pretty mild user and it was still fairly interesting.

I always get a kick out of these stories about cyclists who get caught and then listening to all the people complaining about how dirty the sport is while at the same time being big NFL and MLB fans. Just because cycling has a better testing program are the drugs/cheats so good. If baseball had any sort of real drug program there would be nobody left in the sport. Don't know about NFL's policy, but I'm guessing they are not looking too hard either.

plus eleventy billion ... The testing program in international cycling is waaaay more complex and waaaaay more difficult then any other sport in the world. The UCI and WADA are testing more often and for more things than in any other sport. The organizers have decided it's less embrassing to kick a star out of the sport or negate a win a year leter then have someone 'get away with it' (and later find out when someone dies or a book comes out)

.... no other sport really cares this much. (for better or worse, some say the scandals are worse then the drugs themselves)

With no reduction in speeds from 20-30 years ago when everyone and there trainer was doping and out in the open about it.

I race Cat 4/5 occasionally and there are people at the local level who dope in Cat 5. No money, no glory, not even a Tee Shirt and they do it.

I can sort of see it for Crash-5. It's a battle-royale around here.

I know normally sit in the back and attack at the end, don't mind being a little slow. First Cat 5 I did was a crash fest. Luckily I was slow and in the back and finished unlike some other racers.
