Attended a press event in France recently... didn't realize part of the drive portion would be in Monaco. We actually drove the F1 circuit... albeit very slowly. Those guys have great big brass ones, let me tell you... those are some narrow-ass roads. It was choked with traffic and pedestrians and as our car was rather wide I was constantly worried about losing a mirror to either a wall, or one of the dozens of motorcylists that zoomed between the lanes. Still, it was a thrill to actually be on such legendary ground... and of course I ran up on the striping at Lowe's corner

Back in 1971 or '72 I was stationed in Sicily for 6 months and while there a few of us took a "day trip" to the race track where the Targa Floria (I think it was?) was run. At that time it was run party on "public" roads like Monaco's GP is. What really surprised me was finding out as the race started that folks were parked along a section of the "circuit"...I mean RIGHT NEXT TO IT, with personal cars as "armco". I wasn't sure who had bigger ones, the professional drivers or the spectators.

Yeah, they sure have a different concept of personal space than we North Americans. I cannot get over how narrow some of the roads are, and how unhesitant they are – dayum they're kami kaze drivers. Beautiful country though, love the yellow light and the ornate architecture.
