I came across this blog and it seems too simple to me.

Battery acid, RIT dye, and a battery charger.

Will it last? Look like crap after a month? Thoughts?

Also interested if anybody has ever done any type of plating also. I'm thinking of trying my hand at some copper plating.

I've done electrolytic derusting, which is the same process. Worked wonders for me. I did mistakenly put some aluminum in the tank once and it blackened it. It's been a dull black for about 5 years now. Never placed into use, but on the shelf, it's remained decent looking.

I use to copper plate nickles when I got bored at work. Just a small container of saline, a 12v source and some sacrificial copper wire.

check on some RC forums, diy anodizing used to be popular for things that either didnt come color anodized or didn't come in a particular color.
