This shaft key is different than any I've seen. It's not a Woodruff because the bottom (top in picture) is flat, and it's not a parallel because the bottom ends are rounded. Anyone know what it's called and where I can buy it in bulk?

You don't know what it is, but you want to buy in bulk?

Can I point out you have a shopping problem?

You have an understanding problem. I have an application that requires this key, but I don't know what it's called or where to buy it. The only shopping problem is that I can't until I know what it's called, which is why I asked. See????

    In reply to bravenrace:

I read the title, and have a good laugh at the wrong wording.

If it was "Anyone know what this is CALLED"- I could not play that game. (named would be a good add, too, as it would get your intention across the same).

FWIW, I'm sure you know what it is and for. I don't. Good for a chuckle.

And I hope someone can really answer your question.

I so want to know what you are using that for.

It is a type of Wooodruff Key (some are flat on the top) you just have to find one that makes the tapered ends.

I searched on "flat bottom woodruff key" and got nothing! Thanks guys.
My application isn't very interesting. I designed a mobile hydraulic axial direct drive air conditioning compressor drive. In this application I use the compressor without a clutch. The compressor mfr doesn't sell the key with the clutchless compressor, and will only sell it to me in a clutch kit. So I'm left finding another source. Hey, wake up, I'm talking!!!!

I have seen these in pumps to hold impellers in place, but unlike a square woodruff, they don't have the habit of "roocking" and locking in place as a conventional woodruff key often does. I believe the last one I saw was in a fresh water pump in a diesel. Show it to someone who has worked on marine diesel/gas engines for a long time. I think it was a Perkins or Volvo diesel. Hope that helps.

Wouldn't Jeremy Clarkson dozing off be more appropriate? A mobile hydraulic axial direct drive air conditioning compressor drive (phew!) sounds right up James May's alley!

That's the irony. Even James May finds this one a bit of a snooze.

I don't have any of these that I am aware of, but if I find one I'm calling it Jeff also.

First step: Buy lots of regular woodruff keys in that size.

Second step: Quality time with a bench grinder.

    Third step: ?????

    Fourth step: Profit.
