I have an idea for combining two electronics pieces into one unit, have figured what I will need to make them talk, but would like to build a case to present it for manufacturing. Figure it to be a little larger than a GPS unit.

Is it better to farm out or try to build it myself?

I've hot molded plastic myself. Yes, farm it out to the shops that do this as a business. The results are much better. Even for one offs, it's still quite reasonable.

Plastic is waaaay too hard to do in home. Go with resin instead. Search model car building forums for more info.

If you have / can get the design into 3D CAD, then it can be rapid prototyped. With a bit of bodywork, an RP piece can look like a production piece.
