So I am looking for advice on living and working in Afghanistan. Mostly I want to figure out what to bring. I have the list of stuff that they give you, but it is so basic. It says boots, jacket, and tooth brush.

I have a friend working out there right now, I can ask what he advises to bring. I'll have to wait a day though, he's getting married today.

Try contacting a local college that offers courses in the middle east studies. They may have someone on staff or they can refer you to.
As with any move, I suggest you keep your head down, mouth shut, and do lots of observing to try to blend in. Sounds like you're military, so that may be hard, but, good luck and come back in one piece.

In reply to Osterkraut: Ya that sounds like the best advice yet. I know the guy that hired me loves his iPad.

I had a buddy over there, he spent a lot of time on facebook. It largely depends upon where you will be stationed. Bring a solar charger for your electronics, and consider adding a kindle app to whatever device you plan to bring.
....and stay safe.
