Dunno about that. Peanut Grin manages to step on his own weenie pretty regularly. It pains me to realize that a guy that smart (he's a nuc engineer) can be such an idiot.

Obviously you don't work in the nuclear industry. You'd know a nuc engineer has nothing to do with smarts, common sense, or anything remotely connected to intelligence. A common saying in the industry is " Engineer? I wouldn't let him(or her) run my Lionel"!

He was actually training as a Nuclear engineering officer in the navy for nuclear submarines (you know, those tube like things filled with seamen).

Never completed his training, never served on a nuclear sub.

He was the reason I changed my voter registration from independant to republican. I remember what he did to family farms. Former Presidents need to learn to stfd and stfu.

Nope, that was GW. On the Japanese prime minister I believe.

To this day, the Japanese still think his first name is Ralph...

Why do we even call it a "W" when it's clearly a double "V"?

    See look: UU Vs. VV

And why haven't we fould a use for backward and/or upside down "L's"...they're quick to make and not easily confused with other letters?

AC, I didn't know Jimmah didn't finish nuke school. That makes a lot more sense now. He flunked out, so he either developed a hate of nukes or never really "got it." OK.

As for the title of this thread: Yeah, I remember the Carter years. I remember home loans at 18 to 20 percent. I remember 444 days of shame when Jimmah in retaliation for the Iranians taking over our embassy, told us all to drive one day with our headlights on. Yeah, that had them Iranians really shaking in their sandals. I remember why the Iranians managed to take over the embassy: Jimmah told the Marines guarding it to not shoot at them, basically, Jimmah told them to surrender. The Iranians weren't trying to take it over, they just wanted to put on a show and have a few of them get killed for the evening news. When the Marines refused to fight (following Jimmah's orders), the Iranians just kept going and took the thing over. So, yeah, I remember the Carter years. We ain't done with the O years yet. Let's see which is remembered as the worst.

No, he didn't flunk out. His dad died so he left to take over his farming business.

The Iranians hated him so much they waited until Regan's inauguration to release the hostages (I believe it was on the actual inauguration day).

Much like other presidents, I suspect Carter is partially a victim of circumstance rather than the "source" of the economic situations they get into. I have a feeling Carter had about as much to do with the overall economic situation of the time that Clinton did in his time.

There is some merit to that, but applying that logic to Bush43 or, even, Obama would create mayhem.

Carter was probably the worst prez EVAR. He just had absolutely no idea of what he was doing or any concept of his place in history.

He deregulated the oil industry (good move, BTW) but did not consider the greater context of the recent oil shortage's aftershocks. So his timing sucked. And as any comic will tell you, timing is EVERYTHING.

He handled the Iranian hostage crisis very poorly. Operation Eagle Claw was timed all wrong (see a pattern?). The weather was too cold and the sandstorm patterns too unpredictable at that time of year.

He royally embarrassed himself with the 'hissing rabbit'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Carter_rabbit_incident

Then there was the 'national malaise' speech. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidency_of_Jimmy_Carter#.22Malaise.22_speech

I think this is a good example of what I am saying.

I don't think there is anything he did in that situation that embarrassed himself. It was an embarrassing situation (actually more humorous), but that had nothing to do with his actions, he was just unfortunate enough to be in the situation. To somehow blame him for that situation seems inappropriate (but entirely in line with how totally irrelevant things things get wildly blown out of proportion in political situations).

One of the primary reasons why that indecent was so embarrassing was because of this:

Actually I heard they were so scared of Reagan they turned them loose before he took office.

I am pretty sure they did it as in insult to Carter.

As I remember it there definitely WAS the fear factor of Reagan because he'd already promised to send the troops in the minute he was in office.

Ah...... didn't the weapons we sent to Iran in exchange for the hostages have something to do with them being released? Ah no, that was a later hostage taking:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran–Contra_affair

Iran/ Contra keeps popping up in my pea brain, as well as appointing James Watt as sec. of the interior. I know it is blasphemous to say anything negative about Ronnie, but it seems to me no president is all bad, or all good.

Besides, Jimmy Carter had the most entertaining brother out of any pres.

Yeah, Bill, I agree completely. And as that was WAY before Albert Arnold Gore, Jr. invented the internet, there was no quick "lemme check that a sec."

And as for the helicopters in the desert thing, all I know for sure about that is that I know people that were on the recovery vessel and they said that what was released as the official story was not what happened. And Marines were there (on the US ship) to kill anyone (in the US crew) that looked too close.

We also will never know the full story on the Iran Contra thing or Reagan's involvement with the hostages. I remember the Reagan years too. They weren't all that great either, but they were better than the Carter years and they bought us 10 years or so of a reprieve from the totalitarianism that we are experiencing now under the full control of the Communist Party of America (DNC) and their little socialist brothers, the new GOP.

And Joe, are you seriously using Wiki as a source for any information about anything?

Nah, I don't really trust Wiki, but I got lazy and threw that link up for the youngsters who may never have heard about Iran/ Contra.

Kind of like mentioning Whitewater in 10 years......

Maybe, but that old phrase "unindicted co-conspirators" still pops-up every now and then.
