I looked at the still frame right when the car turned to it's left and it does look like the LR tire went down or the suspension collapsed.

What's the long cable from the wheel to the car?

i'm surprised that it didn't catch fire, i'm actually surprised any of those Ferraris made it through that race.

I was thinking the exact same thing... I kept waiting for the pitting car to erupt.

I hadn't seen the video of the audi crash until now, it seems like a major failure of safety precautions to have a race car explode into peices in the middle of a big crowd of people just standing there. I didnt think things like that happened at races anymore, but I guess you never know. At least no one was really hurt.

It says on the back of the ticket you may be killed or injured. Actually in France it probably says "À un point vous la capitulation de mayl aux débris, ayez votre drapeau blanc prêt"

Restraint. Keeps the loose wheel from flying into the crowd.

That wasn't a "Big crowd of people just standing there." The crowd was a collection of corner workers, photographers, and marshalls. They all had signed special waivers to be in front of the catch fencing.

I still think almost 20 people is a big crowd for a race car to explode in the middle of.

That car is very much second hand now. Great announcing.

the car "exploding" into pieces is more safe than dangerous. When the car does that it is dissipating all that kinetic energy instead of absorbing it and having it go through the drivers body, hence why Mcnish and Rocky are still alive.
A "sturdy" car keeping it's structure in an accident like that would have most likely killed them, but hey at least the cars would have been "fixable"...........

I didnt mean at all that the car didn't do what it was designed to do and protect the driver, the part i was questioning was the fact that the wheels and other parts went flying a foot from peoples heads who were standing in a rather unsafe area.

I am inclined to agree with you, however, they weren't just innocent bystanders or even spectators. They signed waivers to be where they were, because that is their job. They HAVE to be close to the action, and they are very aware of the risks.
It could have turned out much worse, but in reality, those are the EDUCATED risks you sometimes have to take.
I have been in places like that, and in no less danger just to get a photo that nobody else could. You should see what Stage Rally photographers do for the shot...those guys are nutso..
