Well my birthday is quickly approaching and the girl friend wants to buy me parts for the Olds (god bless her). I have the engine trans and rear covered (though maybe a bit here and there still needed) and honestly i'm kinda stuck on what to ask her for.

Originally I was thinking of putting a Regal front end on the car from the local wrecking yard as most of my damaged body work is up front and I don't have stock bumpers. Besides the Regal nose looks better. I thought about asking her for some of the sheet metal but then last night we were looking at G body pics and she saw a Monte SS. She asked me what about putting the Monte nose on the Olds.

This actually got me thinking it might look good though the Monte fenders and hood are way off in their lines. I then remembered the more "universal" fit Monte SS nose used for stock car racing. It would be in the price range of what she is looking to spend and I could make it fit better than the factory stock one as the lines are a bit different and more simple on the race one. Any ideas on modding one of those noses for street use? What about a bumper for behind the cover?

Anyone know a good source for one piece noses? Most seem to be the two piece split down the middle ones.

Any other suggestions for what to have her find (mind she is not big on junk yard rummaging yet, except for stereos)?

It depends on how ugly you want it to be. They are made to be disposable. There is a big seam down the middle and no holes for headlights. The plastic they are made from does not take paint of filler well, and is very flexible. A better idea might be to see how well El Camino/ Malibu fenders line up and get an ElCamino SS nose.

It's your car...but I don't like the monte ss stuff and I don't think it would be easy to pull off with the roundy-round parts. Well...not and have it look like anything other than a stahk kah. "There's nothin' stahk abouta stahk kah!" [/robert duval].

Regal could be cool with a nice chin spoiler. i don't know how all the lines work out.

however, I REALLY like the stock '78 cutlass frontend...so that's me.

It's not sexy like bodywork, but how about just going down your list list of needed parts for the car (I KNOW you have a list) and pick out some combination that works out to what she's wanting to spend. Then...the real gift will be installing the parts together.

(wheel bearings, brake stuff, a pair or set of shocks, suspension bushings, poly engine mounts <--that could be a winner).

A gift certificate for bead blasting and/or powdercoating?

An oil or transmission cooler (thoug, IIRC, I think you're going with a standard transmission)

An electric radiator fan...heck...a nice radiator.

I don't know what the price range is...

    Idunno...just some thoughts,
    Clem

Good suggestions glad to know about the limitations on those particular noses for taking paint and filler so that will be out. The car is going to be a frankenstein but I'd like it to be decent. So that idea is out, Monte and Camino fender lines won't line up with the doors right.

The Regal lines actually should match up just fine so that is why I had initally thought that. I agree the '78 Olds nose looks good but the '80 is just flat out fugly and very blocked off.

Good suggestion on the poly mounts I have yet to pick those up so that might be good. Hmmm maybe some of the bits to stiffen out the chassis.

EDIT: Yep Clem going with 4 spd.

Just a refresher on the car in question. Its a 1980 Olds Cutlass, getting an early 350, 4spd trans, 12 bolt rear, had a set of racing springs sitting in the trunk when I got it and has some aluminum bits year and there (originally a diesel car). Shooting for the 300hp range and making the thing actually handle decent.

Don’t feel bad Wally, automatic doors never open for me. Well there was one time but it turned out someone that mattered was tailgating me so that doesn’t really count.
