I like 911s.. I had a 72. But I agree.. the modern porsches have lost a lot of what excited me about the old ones. Am I sick that I miss lift off oversteer?

Actually, I'm finding myself more and more attracted to Porsches in general these days... But it's quite unlikely that I'll ever own one newer than 12-15 years old.

Damnit please tell me theres a build thread somewhere!

Unless I miss my guess, that's a guy in Blighty who is sticking a Minor body on top of a Miata drivetrain and suspension. I saw the thread last year so it's probably finished by now.

That car is a minor body on a 240 chassis.

Ok, I'm going to challenge you. I drive a 98 forester (stock, auto) and my wife has a 05 vag-mobile (Grand Caravan, cuz we're too cool for our Caravan not to be Grand). Now, to make this competition fair and complete we should disclose our other automotive holdings. I have a 74 mini, RHD that needs the starter to be put back in and my 04 challenge car (198? GLH) with a blown turbo. Does the fact that I have 2 fun cars that don't even freakin run make me better or worse for this board?

The only Porsche that thrills me:

Does it oversteer when you let off the gas? No? Then it ain't a real Porsche.

I have severe feelings of hatred toward all Porsche models that were not designed SPECIFICALLY for the racetrack!

Technically mine is a Grand Caravan Sport but the Forester is 1000x better than the silver rental that I drive.

"Does the fact that I have 2 fun cars that don't even freakin run make me better or worse for this board?" Better of course! A car that won't run is like a girl in trouble, it's a temporary thing.

I will half-agree, new-ish 911s don't do much for me. I look at them with kind of a "I'd like to try that on a track for a session" but that's about it. I do still lust after an 'early' 911 though. If you don't like older 911s, you just haven't driven the right one.

In my past, I worshiped all things Italian exotica. I could certainly pool my money and buy a Ferrari toy if I wanted one, but I've cooled completely on such things. High priced or exotic cars now hold little interest for me. I can have as much, or more, fun with something costing a few thousand bucks with the bonus I don't have to be paranoid about breaking it.

Certain cars do get an exception, though, when they are built for the single purpose of driving and not to impress the neighbors. The Elise falls under this. I don't care if the badge says Lotus or Kia...I need to have a car like that.

I want one, but who cares. People on here lust after Starions, Yugos and Swifts... we're a weird bunch.

If Porsche would put the same development effort into a Cayman race car, it would be faster than a 911... so in my book that makes liking a Cayman GRM worthy.

her's why i've ALWAYS paid attention to new cars, even expensive ones. it's a great way to get to know the cars yorue actually going to buy in 10-20 years. Those cheap fun car you guys want now? they were new cars that guys like us couldn't afford back then.

My 740iL daily driver was a top of the line, nearly $80k status-mobile a mere 8 years before I bought it as a high mileage, $7500 daily driver that gives all the luxury and performance/handling it did new.

When I bought my '74 911s, it was 20 years old. Unaffordable when new, but easily affordable and much fun when used. Paying attention to it, and drooling over it when new, however, is why I knew it was a fun car that was a great value when used. I pay attention to, and drool over new perfrmance cars because I plan on being around long enough to see them become affordable used toys.

Don't care about the Lexus LS400 when new? Now we have fun swapping the engine in one into other cars.

So yeah, paying attention to new luxury/performance cars is grassroots in it's own way. Plus, now we can cherrypick the best parts of what modern tech has brought us. We just don't do it by buying a brand new car.
