Wife Camaro has blown speakers in the doors. They are component (?) type that have four wires going to each one. I don't want to spend a ton of money replacing them, so can I join the positive from tweeter and mid and negative from tweeter and mid to use generic two-connector speakers?

Are these factory or after market? Any component speakers I've seen include a crossover that's typically mounted in the door. If you follow the four wires back a bit you may find a box that has a the normal speaker wire going into it.
But I'm guessing a bit here.

Ug. Well, if you can find speakers that you can look at- a lot of them have two sets of wires leaving the terminals. So you could modify them.
What's "blown" exactly. No sound at all? Woofers blown but tweeters work? There's a few ways to skin that cat without spending a ton.

Factory multichannel. Figure out which pair is the high pass and low-pass with a test speaker. I have modded Alpine Type-s co-axes in the past by unsoldering the tweeter wires off of the terminals on the frame and extending them with quick disconnects going to the high pass channel. Wire up the woofer to the low-pass as usual. I'm sure you can do the same with other brands.

You probably have the same stock sound system my 98' Camaro has. The previous owner ended up running new speaker wires through the car to an aftermarket head unit. Its a mess.

What about putting component speakers in the car? I picked up some Infinity Reference component speakers for $50 on another forum one time, and deals like that are common.

What size are the speakers? If it's a bi-amped system with the crossover happening before the amp, you just need to find appropriate size drivers. If they're normal sizes, shouldn't be too hard. There are inexpensive component systems you could use if you just want some sound. Just don't use the included crossovers. This type thing:

Or if the tweeters are working and you just need woofers, then just find some decent woofers. Maybe something like this:

That Focal is probably a decent driver. Doesn't go very low, but Focal is usually pretty good stuff. I've had good luck with the Dayton stuff. There's all kinds of woofers for $10 or so. A little more and you can probably get something as good or better than factory.
A tweeter like this would probably fit a lot of factory locations.

You also might want to do some searching on a dedicated stereo forum, sometimes those factory amped speakers are an odd ohmage, which will either not sound great with after market speakers, or will kill your amp sooner.
