Is u-haul the only option? The penske ones around here want you to rent their truck to go along with the trailer.

Around here, CT., they are the only public option. I've seen Enterprise with one, but, that was at the discretion of the owner. Now, if you see one of those "tow away your junk car" ads, you might want to give him a call. I found one a couple of years ago for a short haul. He showec up with all the equipment, and a half hour later, the car was on the trailer, strapped down, and on it's way. It was a short move, but the CASH deal was cheaper than dealing with U-haul. And, I made sure he was insured. Big point to look for.

Call around to local places that rent heavy equipment, they usually have trailers that will work for cars. They're usually really cheap on stuff like that as well.

I rented an equipment trailer from Sunbelt to tow my challenge car this year, experience as follows:
Good:
- cheap - $160 for a full week rental
- trailer was in good condition
- friendly and prompt service, they even provided a spare tire at my request
Bad:
- trailer ramps were too steep to load my lowered car, had to use hills or borrowed ramps to load/unload
- trailer was extremely heavy, about 2600lbs
- trailer came with chains and chain binders rather than straps

I found U-haul to be nothing but frustration and madness when trying to rent a dolly or trailer.
The place I bought my car trailer from also does rentals. Might be worth looking at some local trailer shops.

U-haul is OK to most people as they are everywhere and do one way deals. My only problem is they question my vehicle choices for using their products. I get the third degree to rent a tiny 5x8 enclosed deal with my wife's Avalanche, but I pulled my F250 home with it on an open trailer, 8500# roughly.
But the next yahoo in line after me, can rent like a 24' enclosed pulled by an Escort. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

You can thank the Explorer and Firestone for that. The first time I rented a trailer, it was easy, the second - I also got the third degree....

There is a place called Rental Depot in either Gurnee or Waukegan, I think its on Delany or 41, can't remember which. Might want to try them.
There is also Libertyville Rent-Alls right on 137, but I think that they just retired.

.... and they still won't rent a trailer to anyone who owns an Explorer even though the Firestone tires that were a problem are long gone.

I'm still trying to figure out why they will rent to a Jeep Wrangler with a hard top and not with a soft top? Like the top makes it a better tow rig?
