Yes, the expanded metal should work very well at getting air to the coals, you won't get cold spots. You need airflow underneath for an even burn.

OK, Mcmaster? Tractor Supply? Where to get stainless mesh for cheap? My local metal place doesn't have it.

Ace is the place. Well that's where I got mine.

I guess that depends - Mine has an adjustable opening so the mesh would work as I can slide the thing open for more or less air. The mesh is just a cradle for charcoal that allows the ash to fall into the cleanout tray.

    Ash holes?

    I clean them by forking.

OK guys, I'll go get some more carbon steel and fix it for another five years. Thanks for the advice!

(at least nobody tried to tell me to put an LS1 in it)

More air = more oxygen = more heat.

Why not get a cookie sheet from Wal-Mart/a grocery store? They sell them in many sizes, and yes, they will deteriorate, but as far as cheap, quick, rectangular fixes go, it's probably your best bet.

If you use a cookie sheet, make sure it's not a teflon coated one

I've gone through more cookie sheets trying to keep grills going than I care to remember. For $0.25 or so at a yard sale, they sound perfect.

Do the holes for the ash need to be cleaned that way?

    You know, forking ash holes?
