Not to hijack but are there any good and cheaper alternatives to K&N cone filters?

Nope. US Military trusts them in warzones for a reason...

Cheap contracts and completely owning a giant group of mechanics?

Actually the US Coast Guard got their K&N's outside of GSA so there was no contracts or cheapness involved. When the 47' MLB went through re-cert we had K&N design new filters for it (V6 Super and Turbocharged Detroit Diesels, 2 of em).

Believe me when I say no other filter would hold up to our rigors better or keep the engines cleaner. That's why I use them now on all of my cars, not because of any advertising or car magazines.

I have an Accel Kool Blue. I got two of them free from Accel, for a dyno test, so I don't know how much or where to buy.

S&B makes a good quality alternative, and in sizes not always available from K&N. In fact, they've outperformed K&N in some tests - but every filter outperforms K&N in some test if the advertising is to be believed :)

Amsoil makes a washable filter that doesn't require oiling thats supposed to be pretty good. They aren't cheaper though, but saving a cleaning kit every few years may make up for it.

it may flow better, but does it still filter? I still have a hard time believing fine dirt won't make it through.

After tearing about countless marine engines with hundreds of hours at WOT I can tell you the K&N ones were always cleaner then the paper or foam substrate ones.

On a car note I go 5,000 miles between oil changes in the cop car's already loose 4.6 (with Royal Purple 5W20) and the K&N air filter and intake tube get checked at the same time. The oil is just starting to brown at 5K, no particles. Inside of the tube is clean as a whistle, as is the throttle body. Keep in mind on this oil change the car saw 6 drag days at 50+ passes, an HPDE at a long road course (PIR) and an autocross all within that 5,000 miles of daily-driven duty.

K&N is the best for a reason, they flat out work. Pony up a couple of bucks and buy one.

Ok, am i better off with a K&N stock style filter or the FIP-K?

Filtration either/or, power the FIPK. I have the FIPK on the cop car and the regular drop-in replacements on the Grand Prix and the RX-7 (though that will have a custom-made CAI with a K&N cone soon).

I use a paper filter for a while, during the double cleaning process of my k&n. I just think I need a new engine in the first place so I don't really care lol. I hate being a student.
