So my laptop is starting to slow down and I was wondering what I can do to speed it back up. Also how do I get rid of some of the stupid Windows programs which came with the computer (such as Windows sidebar and media player.)

If you've never run anything like Crap Cleaner, now's a good place to start. Be careful with the options if this is your first time, and it'll delete tons of files you didn't know you didn't need anymore. It also has a handy uninstall section, as well as a registry cleaner. Cleaning the registry can be a bit more questionably useful, but it doesn't hurt if you've never done it before. After that, I'd check out a memory upgrade.

Ho wold is the OS install? If it is more than a year or two I would suggest saving off anything you want to keep and then wiping the drive and starting over again.
I know it is a pain in the butt but anything else you do will not really fix the problem.

I don't want to/ can't do an OS reinstall because I have a number of programs I would lose that I really don't want to.
