There are a few companies that sell ready made quads, but they're fairly easy to DIY. The motors are controlled by a mixing board connected to the receiver. Flitetest.com even reworked one of the boards to fly a replica of the avatar gunship.
They make great video platforms since they are so stable, quite a few people making money doing aerial photo/video with quads

I want to build one to be controlled by my Wii controller - imagine being able to adjust pitch and yaw by tilting the remote, then use the trigger or other buttons to control throttle...I just peed a little again...
Holy crap. That thing + my Go-Pro HD + duct tape would keep me entertained for the whole week between xmas and new year. Or, more probably, leave me with a crashed quad-copter and a broken camera before noon on xmas.

I'm so indoctrined by television that my immediate mental response to that picture was "Hi, Doctor Nick!".
Copter-thing is way cool. So awesome when it just shoots off into the sky at speed.
