Thinking about end of year gifts.  Anyone have one they like?  Also thinking about the portability factor since it's not like we've only got one car.  GRM after all.

The Viofo A119 is the cam you're looking for.  Get one of the GPS/Charging bases for each car and it is easy to swap.  They use a capacitor so you don't need to worry about heat destroying the battery.

I bought the BlueSkySea back in April via Amazon..  It has worked well.  Rather than $50 I paid 76.89 to have a 64gb card included.

Not real portable unless you buy the $9.99 suction cup mount (which I did not.)

Many of the "ActionCam" style cameras have a Dash Cam mode.

I’ve generally run cameras in the $50-70 range and expected them to last for no more than a couple years.  Dash cam talk is a good place to look, I like their reviews and ratings.  I’ve run a few variants of the G1W in the past and like them.  Right now, I’m using a couple of discontinued Magellans, that I picked up on closeout.  Really liking them so far, including being able to log gps coordinates.

I purchased this one last October- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0742DD36K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Added a 64GB card and have been pretty happy with the results.

Your recommendation resulted in me purchasing two of these by the same company. Will report back when they arrive and as I use them.

I picked up a Qsee dash cam that does 1080p.  It also has impact sensing so it can capture stuff while you're not in it... which only works if you get hit from the direction the camera is pointing.

Only downside is if you're using it in an American car.  It is designed to come on when it gets power.  Since most American cars have constant hot 12v at the accessory plug, it stays on all the time.  Japanese cars with switched accessory outlets would be a better match

Follow-up:

I purchased two Roav A1 by Anker cameras and have used one of them for two full weeks now. I have to say, I am impressed. The camera just *works*, I do not have to mess with it at all. The mount that comes with it works great, the charger adapter is nice, and they give you plenty of cord to tuck it away up the A-pillar. The camera's functions are very nice and the picture quality is surprisingly good! It would make an excellent budget track day/autocross cam FYI.

I have only 1 video worth noting. I was at my sister-in-law's for my niece's birthday party and my nephews were outside playing ball. They decided to play "car ball" by smacking my car with their ball. The camera's shock sensor detected the bounces and recorded them on it's own and flashed a notification at me when I got in to leave. Needless to say the boys were busted and we forwarded the video to Santa! laugh

Highly recommended, especially at the price!

I use a Garmin, a little bit more money, runs a little warm, takes good video. I run it 24 hours a day for 5 days straight whenI am working. (drive a truck, well for 2 more days...)

Made this video from the Garmin dash cam

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTn1zYys7Ao

Saved me when my company wanted to give me a preventable accident, the video clearly shows I didnt do anything wrong.

The perspective is off because the camera is at the top of the windshield, like 10 foot off the ground but here is a normal speed video:

Look for the white truck off to the right, it took out trees that don't show in video....
