Also check out the video at the bottom of that article.
Anyone else have Doom on their phone? All but my first 2 phones could run it. Really blew people's minds to see the game running in all its glory on a Treo 650.
Well, I know what I'm going to do tonight. I still haven't played machine games add-on episode for Quake1 though.
DOOM has been ported to the Switch now too. All three of them. I've been resisting

Ouch. Watching old res 4:3 is painful to me. I play GZ Doom on a 21:9 at 2560x1080 typically with upscaled textures. Its not beautiful by any means, but damn does the gameplay hold up well.

All 4 of them (no Doom64, but there is some speculation that is coming soon).
Honestly I would have a hard time owning it for anything but pc. Also doesn't it feel like a rip off when you (surely) already own it elsewhere and the source code was released for free 22 years ago?
Wow... this just popped up for me on YouTube.
It's a nearly 20 minute long video, but if you can sit through the exposition and the nuts and bolts, which I can because it details the history of people discovering and exploiting the exact nature the DOOM engine, the payoff at the end is wild. It just Keeps Getting More Interesting. Speedruns of sub 20 seconds on some levels, with no cheat codes.
Excellent watch, thanks. I love watching technical videos about Doom (and Quake)
Ignoring the canoe salesman, anyone been ripping and tearing with the new Doom games?
I still need to pick them up and try 'em out
I never played the game, but Romero and John Carmack were in my PCA Chapter back in the 90s and had this insane Porsche Race Car built by Bob Norwood. I saw it out at the track at Mineral Wells Airport at a time trial event. It was stolen along with the semi trailer it was transported in from behind Norwood's shop. Rumor had it that it was taken to Mexico by the leader of a drug cartel.

Id Software was in this tacky 70's style office building off of 635 in Mesquite back then. The two Ferraris really looked out of place in that parking lot.

Yes, they are both excellent. Eternal deviates from the traditional a bit more, but its still great. If Doom 2016 is a 10/10, eternal is an 8/10.
The idTech7 engine & optimization of Eternal is nothing short of amazing.
I really need to play the new Doom games. Last one I played was Doom 3. It was more of a survival horror game with the whole flashlight mechanic, and it freaked me out at times. I've heard the new ones are just all-out, demon-slaying action which is more my thing.

Mostly accurate. They have some upgrade path for weapons and player attributes which is about the only thing that detracts from the otherwise non-stop slaying.
IdTech7 coupled with AMD FreeSync means even basic machines can play DOOM and Doom: Eternal. It's so optimized it's amazing, in a time when Call of Duty is over 250GB in size (!).
I'm finishing DOOM2016 before jumping into Eternal. Some people were against Eternal's more arcady style... like you weren't playing a game where you gain health and ammo by shoving a chainsaw into a demon's throat.

I still haven't finished Doom 2016 yet
I'm also stuck on eternal now. Even playing on "normal" it's intense. Like I almost have the pattern figured out for the level I'm stuck on, but missing a dodge or targeting the right enemy and it's lights out.
I'm afraid to play through again on nightmare to be honest.
