So to make a long story short, the button on my clothes dryer is glued so that is doesn't move. How can I dissolve the glue and get it working? Will acetone work?

I think acetone works with CA (superglue) but YMMV

Fingernail polish remover will do in a pinch (like when someone sticks appendages together accidentally). I'm not sure what it is made of...now I'm thinking maybe it's acetone.

If you have time to shop (as in, your ear is not glued to your shoulder, Ralph Wiggum style), go to a hobby store and find the solvent for CA (cyanoaccrylate...not sure on the spelling). It won't be cheap, but it'll work well.

Something fell behind the dryer, I went to get it. Broke the knob. Tryed to put the knob back on...

This is why I don't fix things in the house.

When I worked at a hobby shop, one of the CA debonders we sold was straight nitromethane.

Weird, but as true as my memory, FWIW. I don't recall whether it was more or less effective than the the other stuff (which looked/smelled quite different).

EDIT: I had to doublecheck myself on the nitromethane thing after all these years, but if wikipedia is any more reliable than my memory (is it?), I have that correct, and acetone is indeed listed as well. Wikipedia on CA solvents.

I've used this one with good results: http://www.mcmaster.com/#super-glue-removers/=cy6blk

It would suck to pay shipping for something that costs $2.40 though.

Does the solvent need to be hootus-safe?

Acetone will work, but keep in mind that it will also dissolve a lot of plastics.

Most of the good CA dissolving fluids are nitroalkanes. A common product is nitropropane, for instance. If you have access, nitroethane may also work. Nitromethane is likely to be too volatile - though it sure eats paint!
