Some comments here point out that it would be easier and more foolproof to check the position of the gearbox internals (if you want to modify your gearbox):

Seems like this would be even easier with a programmable chip and just road speed vs RPM as inputs. That way all you need are the gear ratios as variables and it works for every car.

Some work like that (some "track cam" systems use this to get gear data with only a GPS and the gear ratios as an input), but they're no use if the car is stopped or the clutch is disengaged.
Doesn't help for a remote start neutral safety switch. When the car is parked the road speed is always zero no matter what gear you are in.

yeah, missed the whole point of the article by just looking at the ridiculous mess of wires and thinking that it was way over the top complexity-wise.

hey neat, haven't had a chance to check HAD yet. this only makes sense to me if your shifter goes directly into the trans, if you have some kind of linkage id put all my sensors out there, spreads things out a bit and gives you a chance to use micro switches.
also, why not just use some rubber bands and two buttons? one on one side for gears 135 the other for 246, if the lever is moved it pushes the button, rubber bands can stretch and wont affect your shifter feel much.
or cables with spring loaded pull switches... same thing as the rubber bands.. after all, the heat in the car in summer and the cold in winter dries out and degrades rubber
