Even though I did see the Air Intake, that's still impressive that they can run the engine completely submerged. Are diesel electronics not as sensitive to water?

Somehow they missed two key invetions in the history of man. Bridges and boats. Yea, they are for a good reason.

Probably because they were told to.
Intake is behind the cab. Those old diesels probably don't have any electronics.

My old Dodge had no electrica at all. Feed it air and a near-combustable liquid and it would run.

What were those guys thinking? The guy with the camera was a little harsh when he should have been wondering if everyone made it out alive he was busy calling them names, but those dudes were being extremely stupid.

Have to be honest here- the way the group proceeded, they were not part of the solution, but part of the problem.
It's great that the Guard is there to help, it's not great when they do something that puts the "help" at risk, especially when they didn't have to.

This. You shouldn't proceed with a rescue if you do so in a way that means you're likely to have to be rescued yourself. Never mind how they expected to keep the engines running or the exhaust going - I'm wondering how they thought they'd be able to see where they were going!

If this is the video of the two deuces driving through the flood waters, it wasnt entirely their fault.
I read that they were mobile when a levee broke and they were trying to get out with the trucks but as you see didn't make it.
The trucks intake is behind the cab. They obviously had taken them into too high of water and most likely killed the trucks. That is the fault of their commanding officer. They are just National Guard soldiers that don't probably have all the experience they need with those trucks.
The guy on the bridge filming that was so critical of what they were doing was kind of a jackass. Once he saw them scrambling to get on the top of the trucks, he should have helped them any way he could, but no, he kept on filming.

Exactly. If you have a mechanical fuel pump and no spark plugs, water becomes much less of an issue.
One of the central plot points in Martin Woodhouse's Blue Bone involved driving an old semi (after fabbing up a snorkle) under the Berlin Wall through a canal/tunnel.

I read somewhere that there was a plan to equip the M35 deuce and a half with a PTO on the front and rear axles. The idea was that you could chain a few of them together, and drive across the bottom of a small river. The ones in front would shut off their engines, and be powered by the ones behind still on shore. Once across and on dry land, the ones in front would start up and power the back half across.
Can't find any evidence of this, but it's a story that has stuck with me.

exactly.. as long as they kept the revs up to keep the exhaust clear. those trucks would keep going until the driver ran out of air of the intake snorkle went under.
Mechanical fuel injection for the win
Chances are.. those engines only needed to be drained, cleaned out, new filters, oil, and fuel, and they would be good as new

you have to admit.. until they got in too deep... it looks like fun.
Do have to wonder though.. at what point did they realise it was a bad idea?
