I have a friend from Australia going to take an extended vacation to the United States for a couple months.
He wants to know if there is some way to purchase a newer vehicle and legally drive it for the time he's here and then sell it again at the end of his trip.
I am not aware of any program or goverment set up for anything like that. I know in Europe, some countries have the setup for foreign visitors.
i think it would be more fun and adventurous to buy a series of cheap beaters and discard them as they die..
The problem he's going to run into is getting the car insured on a non-US license, that's going to be somewhere between very expensive and nigh-on impossible.
Getting a drivers license on a visitor visa is also going to be close to impossible.
Cash does wonders, hard part is to sell it for what he paid in the time he has to sell it.
He should probably get a new Porsche Cayman S in a dark color, take the depreciation hit....I mean, enjoy the hell out of it for a few months, and then give me a call when he's ready to go back home.
That sounds like it would be a lot of fun.
I pretty sure he can use his Australian license and not need to get a US drivers license.
As far as the financing, now that's the tough part because the lenders all are looking at the long haul for making their money and they don't want to do the short notes. Cash or set up a 90 day note from his bank in Australia before he leaves?
I do know it is becomming quite the holiday for folks in the UK to fly to the east coast of the US, Buy a beater caddy convertible or something and drive across the US to Los Angeles where they sell the beater and pick up one or two other cars and ship em back home. There are some very entertaining threads on UK car forums detailing the adventures.
I think i've heard of people doing this buying big ole station wagons and sleeping in them cross country and then selling them at the end of the trip. I have an evil thought of taking a trip across Europe in a very very cheap euro beater and dumping it at the end of the trip..
I would like to go the other way. Pick up a nice K108, do a few trips across Australia, and the begin my trip around the world from there.
