Is there a school that helps the kid practice situational awareness and to develop foresight? Driving to avoid accidents is more than just having a high level of car control.

    Edit, can't spell.

Wow. Glad everyone's ok. Chalk that up to luck and most likely that plastic-bodied car she was driving! Say what you will about Saturns, but they stand up really well in bad crashes.

I, too, would be curious about the cause of the "oops my wheels are off the road." Distractions are a PITA.

There is. It's called Street Survival... ironically, it's also the reason those parents thought Tim and I had made our son into a wild-eyed street racer. We tried to explain about the school and encourage them to enroll their newly licensed drivers as we had Tommy; not only did they not do so, they also said they didn't want their kids to ride with Tommy because he'd do all that crazy stuff he'd learned at "racing school".

As another poster mentioned, pro racer Andy Pilgrim is also trying to educate young drivers with the Andy Pilgrim Foundation.

Sorry for the hijack, but threads like this (and accidents like this) provide a great opportunity to get across a very important message. Glad to hear everyone's okay.

And to think, I sat at the same table with you at the Challenge Banquet...

Nah, I was just too lazy to go back to pg 1 and see who mentioned that, actually... however, THIS is why we need forum names on nametags at the Challenge. Not to mention interpretive dances based on our screen names, but maybe that's taking it too far.
