    $9999 expired on 12/5
    $8999 expires on 12/12
In about 4 more weeks this will be a real sweet deal.

CEL is on; finding out why is going to be key. FWIW, the M5 engine is known to carbon up the exhaust gas recirculation passages in the block, necessitating removing the engine and disassembling it to manually ream out the passages. Needless to say, this is not cheap.

Cafax says it was a repo, so maintenance may not have been on the po's mind....

Depending on where you live, the CEL may be mildly annoying or need to be fixed to renew registration. I have dreams of buying an M5 from one of the latter geographic areas at a firesale price (the carbon-ing does not affect how the car runs) and then drive it here with CEL.

yeah, but after that it goes back to $13,500.

Or necessary unless you need them clear to pass an emissions test.

It's not necessarily the carbon problem. These are complicated cars with much creativity when it comes to having problems. But it does seem the DIY crowd is moving in a bit, so there's getting to a bit more of a knowledge base on how to electrically test MAF sensor resistance instead of how to install $400 illuminated door sills.

Good to hear Keith. Which reminds me: are you still happy with yours?

Yes. Although I'll be a whole lot happier when I figure out this driveability problem that's making it buck and stall at idle. We'll see what the next test drive says about my latest fix. I got distracted by a new toy this weekend, and the drive to work is too long for checking the problem out.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've heard the carbon problem discussed much on the M5 board. Much ado about MAFs though. That's what Beast owners are usually concerned with.

    In reply to Keith:

at work we've got an e39 that would run like total crap with any sort of tip-in off idle cold and got a little better as it warmed up but never cleared itself out fully. swapped in a known good pair of MAFs and it ran great so we got a pair of the VW MAFs and swapped sensors and housings and the car practically transformed its driveability.

Or you could buy mine, which is in pristine condition, for $20k and not have any concerns.

I've got new BMW MAFs in it, and the symptoms are a bit different. Unplugging the MAFs and going to the MAP-only operation doesn't fix it.

Trust me... I very much want to! (I saw when you posted it) The price + timing just isn't working (or so says SWMBO :) )
