NBC has given Conan O'Brien the option to either do his show from midnight to 1 or leave the network, sources tell TMZ.

As TMZ first reported, after the Olympics, Jay Leno will get his 11:30 PM time period back. We're told network execs have told Conan they will let him decide if he wants the midnight to 1:00 AM time slot. If he does, Leno's show will only be a half hour. If Conan walks, Leno will get a full hour, informed sources tell TMZ.

Our sources say Conan has not decided what he wants. We do know he's pissed, because he was given no advanced warning this was coming. Conan's people told NBC they are considering the offer. Translation: Mr. O'Brien -- I have Rupert Murdoch on line one, Stephen McPherson on line two, John Landgraf on line three, Jeff Wachtel on line four ...

We're told if Conan gets another offer, even though NBC could block the move, they will let him go and give Leno the full hour.

    Stay tuned ...

I watched Jays new show for one week. I wanted to watch more but it just didn't work out.

Conan should walk and take his original writers from Late Night and go to another company and go straight up against Leno's early time slot. That way I dont have to stay up late to watch him! While I dont think Jays is as funny as Conan, I like them both. Conan is just more my style.

If i was Conan and they pulled this, i'd just walk.

Hallelujah! While Leno isn't my hero Conan has done more to keep Americans from being sleep deprived than any other late night talk show host other than maybe Arsenio Hall. The news is funnier than Conan.

And that hair! OMG! Well OK, Conan's hair is funnier than any other talk show host in history.

Although I respect Leno as a car guy, he's just not funny. What the hell is NBC thinking? There's a reason his show failed.

Love Leno. Loved the old late show. Couldn't force myself past watching bits of the first few of his new show. Sad.

Dropping the Leno show is likely not the answer. How about fixing the damn thing.
That overly long Ford commerical that they do (disguised as a driving portion) is absolutely crap. It is the biggest rip-off (and trashing) of a good thing that it becomes aweful to watch. Really, you want me to watch Bill Maher, f-up the course so that he can run over a Bill Gore poster. Total crap.

Last night Jay opened his monologue with a "joke" about how TMZ was "reporting" that Jay's show may be cancelled. I'm not a fan of Conan, and Jay's new show seems to be trying too hard....or am I just more awake now?

If Jay goes back to late night, Conan gets to walk with a huge settlement. He'll end up on another network making huge money. Conan's in a win-win situation so we shouldn't cry for him.

Jay's new show is flat-out unfunny. The driving segment is stupid. The ventriloquist guy is pointlessly vulgar without any trace of humor. It's so bad, our local 11:00pm news went from first to last in one ratings period. NBC wants to keep both guys somehow because they know one or the other will go against them and steal audience share. They will not get their wish.

The benefactor from this debacle is not Letterman or any late night shows. It's not the networks either. Cable TV shows like "Men of a Certain Age" et al are reaping the fallout. The networks are dead. This is the proof. I should know.....

I gave up on local news and swithced to Jon Stewart and Colbert a loooong time ago.
Interesting, with a format like Jay's and all the talk shows the beginning is the best and it is a downward spiral from there. How did they ever expect to lead into news with this format.
The way news is typically lead into is with a murder/mystery that builds to a grand finale at the end, thereby keeping you too the end.

If this is their excuse, the early Jay format was doomed from the beginning.

I like Jay. I think the problem is the network suits couldn't keep their fingers out of the show format. He just looks plain uncomfortable sitting in an easy chair without a desk, and I'm sure the electric Focus race with the cardboard cutouts and confetti guns isn't what he envisioned. They even made him part his hair differently.

I've watched more of Jay since he's on earlier but thats mostly because nothing else is on some nights. Now if Conan had that slot and did what he did on Late Night, I'd watch that every night and probably DVR it too.

Ross of Nine brings up a good point that I would hope NBC realizes. That is, pretty much no one would succeed, certainly not indefinitely, with an hour long talk show at this time period. That's why it's TiVoed so much..

I don't have cable, but Jay pretty much loses me when he goes into those LOOOOONG and unfunny skits....like last night's Holiday Dinner at Jay's.

10-11 is usually when the wife and I watch all the stuff we have previously DVR'd. Or the local news on our Fox affiliate. I'm part of the "Jay is a great car guy, but he's not funny" crowd, too. In fact, now that Conan is on at 11:30, I flip between him and Letterman, and I was always a Dave guy before.

We know you're reading this Mr. Leno, so I'd like to be the first to offer my services as the American Stig. My primary qualification being that I will gladly listen to strange music, even Morse code, while driving.

Just in case he doesn't check the forums, this should go in the "Say What" section too.
