What in god's name is a torque tube?

The big tube looking thing down the middle. Used to connect a front engine to a rear transmission. Usually buried deep inside a car where you can't get to it without dismounting the world.

OK, drive shaft I know. Changed the bloody hanger bearings on my truck one time.

Yuck, I have never had a hanger bearing change go by the book. The last two I have done I ended up shattering the outer race and cutting the inner race off the shaft.

I sure hope you had better luck with yours.

the difference is that a torque tube is a fixed tube connecting an engine and trans, with a driveshaft inside it.

Gotcha... it's the thing the driveshaft lives in.

Is a hanger bearing also called a carrier bearing?

Torque tubes have also connected the transmission to the rear axle. Mostly on older cars.

Torque tubes don't always connect the transmission to the rear axle. My Opel GT uses what they call a torque tube that solidly connecte the rear axle to the unibody and the drive shaft hooks to it.

And there is a driveshaft inside the torque tube. Not familiar with Opels though.

so a torque is a housing for a drive shaft...???? and this helps the drive shaft how ????

Centre support bearings get the drive shaft removed and then the whole shebang gets toted to my buddies at the drive shaft shop 5 miles from the house. They will replace the bearings and u-joints and rebalance everything for $50.00.

Opel GT rear axle Yeah, basically a housing for a shaft. The attached link is a breakdown of the Opel GT axle. The section from the diff to a carrier is what they call a torque tube and does have a shaft in it. In this case it also act as a pivot point, sort of. The drive shaft has universals but mainly stays straight.
