Sorry about that Tom. I posted this in a half assed form of respect to Mr. Larson.

Interesting letter. I've always wondered why Bill Watterson never went after all the people making those Calvin peeing on Chevy logo decals.

So they actually pay people to troll the interwebs for this stuff? That's pretty funny.

When I was in college, once each year, the school newspaper would publish a parody edition, sort of like The Onion before there was an Onion.

One year there was a modified Family Circus on the comic page. Billy and his mother were staring at the smoldering wreckage of a car.

The captions read, "Mommy, where's Daddy? Where's Dotty? Where's PJ?"

    "They're dead, Billy."

It generated weeks worth of angry mail from people who are not like me.

    Did I fix it?

    Yep, that did.

Guys, can you have the board check for unclosed font modification and auto-close it on posting if it's missing?

Interesting letter. I've always wondered why Bill Watterson never went after all the people making those Calvin peeing on Chevy logo decals.

Actually, he did try. It appears that the companies making them were so small that it wasn't cost effective to try to track them all down, but cease and desist letters did go out. Watterson could have made zillions from merchandising but he never seems to have gone beyond small scale stuff.

one of the major studios tried for years to get him to allow a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon to be made, along with the obligatory holiday specials and what not.

    he said no.

while it would have been kind of cool to see a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon, it's even more cool that he wanted it to stay what it was and not over saturate the market like Garfield or the Peanuts and he knew it probably would have sucked as much as the Dilbert cartoon series.

It seems Waterson felt that an animated C&H would have turned into a caricature of a caricature, not to mention in order to get a studio to back it he would have probably been stuck with some dopey plot line such as 'Calvin and Hobbes Save Christmas'.

Yeah, the Dilbert cartoon series was pretty bad, wasn't it? The only thing I remember was the part about all the 'downsized' employees living in the walls (downsized? small? get it? ) getting high off of dry erase markers.

I tend to put Watterson on a similar plane of existence to Larson.

I read both of them as a child, and I have the complete collections of either strip. I still laugh hysterically at both.

My children will be reading them all, as I feel they helped me become a smarter person from a young age.

The other week simpsons had a Far Side comic in it.... "The real reason dinosaurs are extinct"

I always enjoyed the far side galleries and The Prehistory of the Far Side.

Bill Keane (Family Circus) died recently.

Sugary sappy sweet silliness, but certainly had a long legacy.
