A local food store chain cut a deal with Sunoco; for every $50 you spend on groceries you get ten cents off the price of a gallon of gas.
You're going to buy groceries anyway, right? About once a month I go to Sunoco and give my car a drink of the good stuff.
My outlaws live in Dayton, Ohio and Kroegers there does the same thing. MIL drives so little that she never puts out money for gas, just burns up the freebies.

It's not exactly free, is it, unless you eat a LOT of groceries. 
At $2.50/gal, you'd have to buy $1,250 worth of Little Debbie Snack Cakes to get one gallon of gas.
Kroger has been doing this for a while. My wife and I have to buy certain stuff at the regular supermarket (80% of our groceries come from Dekalb Farmers Market). As soon as we hit the $100 requirement in groceries and both our cars are empty, we both head for the Kroger gas station and fill up. I've been tempted before to grab my gas cans and fill them up too. It usually save us a couple bucks at least. I am pretty sure the "qualifying amount" is pre-coupons, which is great because we do a lot of our shopping based on coupons.

So I would get a free tank every week? SWEET!
Maybe I'm wrong on the numbers, but my SUV holds 18 gallons. My butt twitches when the gas light comes on, to me it's free gas.

Hey, you have to buy X dollars worth of groceries anyway and gas so a little bit of savings helps. You can get up to 50 cents off. The nice part is that I buy my groceries at that chain and usually buy the Sunoco at the same station anyway, so it is a win-win situation.
Yeah, Harris Teeter is doing the same thing. Since we meet the minimum eligibility to participate without even trying it is nice to get that $50 gas card premium. 
I love Harris Teeter. It's what I imagine Bill Gate's pantry looks like. Having been raised on A&P and Kroger, it came to a suprise to me that a grocery store can be a fulfilling experience. First time I walked into one (Amelia Island), I felt I'd gone to food heaven! Trouble is I'm only there 3 weeks a year, max.
The Kroger here in town does the gas discount thing, which is nice, especially if you shop on Wednesday, and get an additional 5% off for Sr. Citizens over 50 which I've been milking since I was 45 ..
Giant Eagle in Maryland has this type of deal with Get-Go stations (both owned by same holding company).
You get 20 cents off for every $50 of groceries and it can be accumulated. The only limit is that you can only purchase 30 gallons of gas.
One time we went to the gas station and filled up the wifes car then she pulled it out of the way and I pulled mine up to the pump and put the rest of the 30 gallons in it.
Price of gas at the time = $3.849 We paid $1.47 for all 30 gallons
And the best part is that Giant Eagle has lower grocery prices than all but one store in the area.
Bi-Lo here has the same type of deal with Shell...
Winn-Dixie started doing that w/ somebody, Amoco maybe?
IDK, I ride my bike 95% of the time and it gets 40-50mpg, and I only need $10-15 in groceries per week so I don't pay much attention.
[edit] I rode ~130 miles today, and couldn't get $10 in the tank.
I ride my bike a lot too to the grocery store and mall and it gets about 20 miles to the gallon--of gatorade. Pedal power!
I like to take the Miata with all of my gas cans. That way, I'm getting my savings worth. Since it's hard to get more than 10 gallons in the Miata, and the Jetta uses diesel, which our local Kroger doesn't sell, I have to take advantage of what I can.
