A friend of mine sent me an image in eps format, but I don't have anything to open it with. Any free programs I can use?

eps is encapsulated postscript so Acroread might work, if not GhostScript is free
If you want to edit it install The Gimp

If it's vector (and needs to stay that way), see if your buddy can save it as SVG, then open with Inkscape (a very nice free vector graphics program). Last I checked, it didn't open EPS, but it does have the advantage of keeping the file in vector format.
Also, since pdf and eps are both flavors for postscript files, you may be able to change the extension to pdf and open it with acrobat reader. Maybe.

I googled .eps viewer and it looks like there are a number of free downloadable viewers available.
