The GTO was $29900. My buddy John bought his 05 brand new for $30K exactly with tax, tag, and title in 05. 40K miles and 3.5 years later it still runs and feels like new. I don't understand why that car didn't sell better...

For sure. I could totally dig on a modern VW Caddy with the 2.0T. I hardly ever tow or haul anything really heavy, so there's no need for a V8, and it kinda sucks having to borrow a truck just to go pick up a few sheets of plywood. You can't get a light duty hauler any more. Really the old Rabbit truck would probably suit my needs, but the 2.0t is pretty sweet.

If only there were someone on this board with enough VW knowledge to pull off a late model swap into a caddy. Maybe someone who has an A1. Perhaps green. Maybe someone who has turbo charged it with PVC piping. It'd be even cooler if that someone had first access to anything that came into the junkyard.

I'm pretty sure the universe is taunting me. I saw a tan VW Caddy (rabbit truck) on my way home from work last night, and a maroon Caddy on my way in this morning. Bastards.

I guess that was kind of what I meant. I knew the GTO was just a tick under $30K, if there was a "low option base model V6" that entry level buyers could buy for $10K less like the Mustain.

The Aussies got a 3800 Supercharged one (think RWD GTP with more power) that might have gone over well. The whole problem with the GTO is that all the old fogies (and thus the mainstream car rags) remember bright orange Judges with scoops, spoilers, hood tachs, and graphics as a GTO. The original GTO was plain vanilla wrapper if there ever was one and the new one I thought matched that feel exactly. Luckily people are idiots and the prices on GTO's are dropping like crazy. When the new Camaro finally hits the streets I imagine there's going to be a glut of GTO's, then I might finally get one!
