Found this article while searching for ideas regarding garage storage. Seems like a good way to take advantage of the wasted space above the garage door. Knowing this crowd, I figure it will appeal to many.

You can also lay light boards across the track tops, then lay things on those boards.

I figured this would be one of those basket you can lower and raise but this is cool too. Seems like a great place to put stuff.

I took my aggressions out on my unsuspecting closet doors a while back and punched holes into them. Well, in my garage rafters, i've laid the closet doors on them and that gave me room to place garage junk on top of them and get them off the floor. It worked out well for me. Those totes look pretty sweet too, though.

They even make those plastic bins like the original photo that are made to slide under a bed.

I made two 4'x4' shelves above my garage door when we bought our house 5 years ago.They are hung from the exposed trusses between the tracks and opener, and allow me to put totes, suitcases, and anything else I want out of the way and don't need regularly.
I framed them from 2x3's and used furring strip for the shelf surface to allow me to see what's on the from the floor.
I left about 3" of clearance between the shelves and the door. That was plenty until I replaced the garage door. I didn't realize the new door track was about 4" higher door hit the shelves the first time I opened it.
They were a lot tougher to adjust than build.

You mean just putting stuff in a pile in the middle of the floor is an inefficient use of space?

your storage options are wide open if you can avoid the temptation to finish off the ceiling.. you can jam a LOT of stuff up in a set of 3 or 4 slope roof trusses..

I should not admit it, but I have used that method, too.....some people who visit my garage walk as though they are in a minefield.

I currently have 3 bikes and 4 chairs shoved up in the ceiling trusses. I also have a loft over the roll-up garage door, and another loft hanging from the ceiling on one side. There is also floor to ceiling built-in 2x4 shelves along an entire wall. Tons of storage space and a ton of open floor now.

My FIL and I built a shelf above my door but there is only about 2 feet of clearance. I use it to store my off season wheels and tires.
