Not a canoe, just wanted to pass this on. Amazon has them on sale for $170.

If you go look on the Frenchman's Cove stage of the Targa Newfoundland, you can have one for free. It vanished from the top of my car at about 110 mph

If someone does find it and the camera is still intact, the video from when it flew off the roof may be interesting to watch.

I kinda wonder how they do after they fall off a car at speed...

I lost mine at a good clip on the autocross course and it didn't phase it at all. I've also smacked it with a cone at ~60. The cases they're in make them pretty sturdy.

A local dirt track racer lost his GoPro during a race and it got embedded in the dirt. It did suffer a crack to the outer case but the camera and video were intact.

I had another fall off the front of my car and went under the wheels. Let's just say that the cases aren't THAT good. Nothing survived, not even the video on the card.

I'm beginning to get an implied recommendation to come up with something better than the standard mounting options...

Or at least use a tether.

Ah, I think that was one of their "Gold Box" deals; it expired after a few hours.

1-day only deal, and that was Saturday.

I'd recommend a tether, yes
The roof cam was attached via one of the adhesive mounts. It had been there for several days, but the combination of the speed and the pounding on Frenchman's Cove was too much.
The one that went under the wheels was attached to the nose via suction cup. The nose is slightly concave in that location and again, I was running hard down a bumpy road.

Suction cups + plastic, flexible bumpers don't mix...
Use a tether.

...and don't necessarily trust the glue-on mounts either
I asked our video guy why he used GoPros over other options out there. His answer: "Because they're cheap to replace if we lose one off the car"
