I have some friends with a pole like that. It was discovered that the guys actually new how to pole dance better than most of the women.
The response: "Because guys spend a lot more interest in pole dancing."

Something like that happened to a girl I knew once... but she was in a club working. The ambulance took her out on a backboard... Turned out she eventually had to have two vertibrae fused in the lower part of her neck. She still dances, just can't do pole tricks anymore.

Actually, the one trick I liked to do was hold my body off the ground horizontally with just my arms. I figure that was sufficiently manly.
